Pointing Brickwork in Warrington, Cheshire, Liverpool & North West
Bricks are used for many different structures from walls, to decks, to patios, to houses bricks have been a favourite of builders and buyers or many years. Brick is a beautiful addition to any home. It’s strong, durable, attractive, and low maintenance. Over many years however the masonry cracks and fills with water, ice, debris and becomes brittle and weak. This happens most often in places like chimneys, under windows, around foundations, behind downspouts and the tops of brick walls. The continued damage to these joints not only looks bad but can weaken the brick. Replacing this is called pointing, repointing or tuckpointing the brickwork. A specialist is required when remedial work is required and we specialize in pointing brickwork in Warrington, Cheshire, Liverpool & the North West.
Repointing is not a job for the weak hearted. It is best to research before taking this on as a weekend task. This is a time intensive process. First the bricks must be cleaned and the old mortar removed from the brick. If there is a large area that needs done or it’s in a prominent area it may be best to hire a professional to do the job. If repointing is not done properly it can look terrible and lead to more damage. An angle grinder and a chisel can be used to cut and chip away the old mortar. The bricks must then be cleaned. Using a pressure washer for this job can be fast and easy, if the location of the brick allows for it.
It is important to match the existing kind of joint work that has already been done. This is accomplished by using different trowels for each different shape. There are V joints that are slightly tilted in. Flush joints that are smooth to the bricks, a concave joint that is rounded inwards. Raked joints are dug in ¼ of an inch from the face of the bricks. Matching the kind of joint work will add beauty and consistency to the project. There are a couple of different ways to apply the new mortar. Each requires a steady hand patience and the right mix of mortar. The mortar needs to be well mixed to a pudding consistency then strained to remove any chunks or lumps in it. This can be done using a bucket with a screen stretched over it. Placing the mortar into the cracks using a small trowel by hand can be done or a tool similar to a calk gun, which can be loaded with the mortar mix. The mortar is then placed into the cracks. If done by hand the trowel can be used to smooth it out as it is being placed if using the gun a trowel is used to go over the lines laid by the gun smoothing them out. Taking time and working slowly provides great long lasting beautiful brick work. The mortar must be allowed to dry thoroughly. When it has dried a brush can be used to take of any access that may still be on the face of the brick. The brick then continues its job enhancing the function, strength and beauty of any home.
